A medical officer is typically a physician (M.D. or D.O.) whose job is to protect the health and well being of the ship's officers and crew. Other health professionals, such as nurses (R.N. or L.P.N.), field medics, medical technicians, and counselors, assist the ship's medical staff in maintaining the crew's well-being. (When there is no counselor aboard, a medical officer will assume this role.)

Altarian Encephalitis

A retrovirus that will incorproate its DNA directly into the cells of its host. The virus can be dormant for years, and activate without warning. Victims would be pyrexic and comatose and would suffer from widepread synaptic degradation. Long-term memory, usually from the moment of the infetion, would be destoyed. (Future Imperfect [TNG])

Anchilles Fever

Deadly disease capable of spreading rapidly on populated planet and causing widespread and painful deaths in the millions. This fever is a highly contagious disease. The vaccine is very rare. In fact, it is found only on planet Ligon II. (Code of Honor [TNG])

Andronesian Encephalitis

A disease transmitted by airborne particles. Easily Treated.

Aphasia Virus

A virus genetically engineered by Dekon Elig and spread by an "aphasia device". Those afflicted spoke and perceived all language as gibberish; if not cured, they would eventually have died. The majority of those on DS9 at the time fell victim, including most of the senior staff; the only ones immune were the Ferengi and Odo. Kira was able to force Surmak Ren to find a cure. Arethian Flu

Viral disease. On stardate 48579, Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram suspected that Lieutenant Hargrove might have Arethian flu. (Eye of the Needle [VOY])


A pathological condition in some humanoid species characterized by the hardening of the arteries and accompanied by the deposit of fat in the inner arterial walls.Joseph Sisko developed progressive atherosclerosis, eventually necessitating that he be given a new aorta.(Homefront [DS9])

Balt'masor Syndrome

Disease. Klingon exobiologist J'Ddan suffered from Balt'masor Syndrome. He required regular treatments, given by injection, for the condition. (The Drumhead [TNG])

Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome

An intron virus that causes humanoids and other animals to develop structural and behavioral characteristics of earlier evolutionary forms. It was accidentally developed in 2370 when a routine synthetic T-cell treatment became mutated. This virus exhibited airborne transmission and worked by invading the host's DNA and activating introns. Discovered by Dr. Beverly Crusher of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D, named for Reginald Barclay, the first patient known to have contracted the virus.(Genesis [TNG])
