Navigational Deflector

This is used to push aside debris, metioriods and other small objects that may collide with the ship. This is accomplished in two ways.

  1. A warp field is used to reduce the weight of the object.
  2. The Deflectors actually collide with the objects and push them aside using powerful subspace field coils that direct and focus energy into a series of parabolic "shields". This deflects small particles and debris. This can also direct an accurate and powerful beam to push aside larger objects, such as asteroids. Most recent Starfleet vessels have been equipped with an auxiliary deflector dish. While the secondary deflector on Intrepid-class or Nova-class starships are more obvious, some like on the Galaxy-class are built within the hull.

The Navigational Deflectors form a cone that extends out in front of the ship. The heart of this system is a set of redundant high power graviton polarity generators. Each of these generators consists of a cluster of six 128 MW graviton polarity sources feeding a pair of 550 milicochrane subspace distortion amplifiers. The flux energy output of these generators is directed and focused by a series of subspace field coils.

First, a series of five nested parabolic shields extend nearly two kilometers ahead of the ship. These low powered fields are relatively static and are used to deflect stray hydrogen atoms of the interstellar medium as well as submicron particles that may have escaped the deflector beam.

Second, the Navigational Deflector, controlled by the subspace field coils , is a powerful tractor/deflector that sweeps thousands of kilometers ahead of the ship, pushing aside objects that may present a collision hazard.

Subspace

A spatial continuum with significantly different properties than our own.

Warp Field

The "bubble" of subspace in which a starship travels when using warp drive. A low-level warp field can have effect of reducing the local gravitational constant within the field itself. This is because a subspace field resembles the time-space distortion of a gravitational field. The effect is that a low-level warp field can be used to temporarily reduce the apparent mass of an object (with relationship to the outside universe).

Warp Drive

The primary propulsion system used by most faster-than-light interstellar spacecraft. Warp drive systems used by Federation starships employ the controlled annihilation of matter and anti-matter, regulated by the dilithium crystals, to generate the tremendous power required to warp space and travel faster than light. Warp drive was invented in 2061 by scientist Zefram Cochrane.

Warp Factor 1 = 1 cochrane (this would mean light speed)

The Galactic Up

There has always been many questions about why starships meet along the same spacial latitudes. This can be easily explained if we understand two things. First, we need to understand that the galaxy does have a magnetic pole. The center of the galaxy is a huge compacting mass of stars and other materials. This huge mass creates a magnetic pole. The direction of this pole is what we would term the galactic up. Second, when two starships meet in space they are not necessarily on the same spacial latitude, but they do maneuver so that they are facing the same up. Thus when two ships meet that are not traveling using the galactic up, they maneuver so they are both facing similar ups.
